Bowling for Columbine – the Fictitious Non-Fiction of Michael Moore

bfcIn 2002 in his Academy Awards acceptance speech, the American director Michael Moore complained that although he likes non-fiction, he lives in a fictitious world. His film “Bowling for Columbine”, an investigation of America’s culture of gun violence, won Oscar for best documentary. Ironically, it could be characterized as non-fiction with plenty of fictitious content.

On Steinbeck’s Imaginative Writing Style and Illusive Philosophy in The Grapes of Wrath

“These goddamned (immigrants) are dirty and ignorant. They are degenerate, sexual maniacs. These goddamned (immigrants) are thieves. They’ll still anything… They bring disease, they are filthy. We can’t have them in the schools.”
Sounds familiar? No, this is not a quote from a Donald Trump’s speech, nor from an European far right nationalist’s statement. John Steinbeck wrote these words back in 1939 to describe how local California folks thought of “Okies”, the migrant people from states such as Oklahoma, Kansas and Arkansas. On November 9th, 1989, the Berlin Wall fell and the communist regimes all over Eastern Europe started to collapse one after the other. The symbol of the Cold war went down after years of unfruitful planned economies in the Soviet block that brought to poverty millions of people. In addition, the total and brutal oppression of the non-communist opposition, and literally the lack of freedom of speech worsened the life of the Eastern Europeans. In the following years several communist regimes in Africa, such as Congo and Angola, also came to an end. Others in Russia and China had to reform themselves into a combination of totalitarism and state-controlled capitalism.
